James Brolin Says "Sleeping Is a Waste of Time" As He Can't Wait to See His Wife Barbra Streisand "Again In The Morning"

Even after 21 years, Brolin and Streisand remain strong together, enjoying every moment they have with each other.

Barbra Streisand and James Brolin had always been quite unlucky in love. But this changed when the two met. Today even after 21 years they remain strong together, enjoying every moment they have with each other. Their aww-evoking relationship, which doesn't seem to slow down, has an even more magical love story. Both actors were married before they found each other. While Streisand was married to actor Elliott Gould with whom she had a son Jason Gould, Brolin tied the knot twice before. Actress Jane Cameron Agee was his first wife with whom he had sons Josh and Jess Brolin, and then Brolin married Jan Smithers and had their daughter Molly Elizabeth, according to Us Weekly.

As fate would have it, their respective marriages didn't last for long and both ended up being single. Apparently, the 77-year-old actress had even become used to being single. "Without being in despair, I was finally liking my solitude," she previously told PEOPLE. This is when the couple went on their first blind date in 1996 totally unaware that their lives were about to change forever. "My husband and I were set up on a blind date," the Funny Girl star told W Magazine. "I met him at a dinner and expected a bearded mountain-man type, and he had cut off all his hair and was clean-shaven. I asked him, 'Who screwed up your hair?'"

This turned out to be the moment when Von Ryan's Express actor fell head over heels for Streisand. "He later told me that’s when he fell in love with me. My fella likes to hear the truth, which is unusual," she continues. However, Brolin wasn't the only one who fell for her as Streisand told talk show host, Meredith Vieira, that "a couple of months" later, she knew he was the guy for her, reports Today. Thus began their everlasting journey of love and after two years of meeting, the couple decided it was time to make things officials.

They exchanged vows and promised to love and cherish each other in sickness and in health. During this ceremony, Streisand professed her affection for Brolin by singing two love songs. Meanwhile, Brolin gave an emotional speech. "I can't tell you how lucky I am that this would happen to me so late in life, he said per PEOPLE. "Every night is a new adventure. Sleeping is a waste of time. I can't wait to see her again in the morning." John Travolta, who attended the wedding along with his late wife Kelly Preston said, "It was probably the most beautiful wedding I’ve been to. Kelly and I cried." Streisand's longtime friend, songwriter Marilyn Bergman shared, "In all the years I’ve known Barbra, I’ve seen her happy, but always with a cloud. This time it was a clear blue sky."

Speaking to Extra, the A Star is Born actress shared how glad she was that her marriage with Brolin lasted so long. "Twenty years in Hollywood is like 50 years in Chicago, I always say," she said, adding that she also learned how to say the truth while preserving emotions. "The Dalai Lama says, 'Give truth with compassion...' I used to use truth as a weapon years ago, actually, 'Well, you look fat 'cause you're fat ... I'm telling you the truth.' Truth with compassion would say it a different way — I don't think you can take each other for granted."

Even to this day, they find happiness in each other. Brolin told Fox News that no matter their busy schedules, the two always find time to be with each other. "We both long to come home to see each other and yet we both love to be in the mix of things at our age," he explained. "We should be retired and on rocking chairs. But she is so intent on what she’s doing. As for me, I’m busy all the time. But we come home to each other. The evenings we’re always together. The days are just us running and holding our pants up." He also told HuffPost about the key to their long marriage. "We've bifurcated, and I love it that way. I have my own money and she has her own money. […] This is my third marriage, and I know what trouble can come out of marriage, so I didn't want any reason that I would ever have to be either divorced or married again. We've been in heaven for 20 years, so it works."

But that's not all, the two also believe in couple's therapy. "I do believe in counseling if anybody ever has a problem in their marriage," He told Entertainment Tonight. "Bring in a referee, talk it over, and I swear to you, it will dispel by the end of the session, each time!" As for Streisand, she keeps the romance alive by leaving heartfelt notes for her husband. "I'm always welcome when I get home," Brolin said. "I always get notes, 'Hurry home!' When I get there, there's always something kind of great waiting for me, some plan, and I try to reciprocate."
